I love my country and consider myself more patriotic than anyone I can say I've met. During my time in Europe I have really had my eyes opened as to the freedoms and liberties I enjoy in the United States that are non existent or severely limited in other parts of the world. This discovery or realization has made me think or rather question what constitutes a "good" country. Is patriotism based off of freedom, your countries government, the land itself, or something else?
I hold a solid belief that the USA is hands down the best country in the world, yet would my own or other individuals patriotism change if certain luxuries were made unavailable? Luxuries such as having the strongest economy, a strong constitution and bill of rights protecting our freedoms, the strongest military in the world, being a citizen, etc.
Having been in and experienced foreign lands i´ve thought to myself "We all look at the same sky day and night, and ultimately are all humans living on the same small rock in our Galaxy." I sat yesterday for a time alone in the Polish woods bordering Germany near Cottbus, and I thought to myself how beautiful this land was, for a time forgetting that I was nearly 6000 miles from where I call home. I thought to myself that if the government and laws of this land were changed, that I could see myself feeling a sense of ´pride and ownership in a different life where I called this country my own. This being said, freedom and pursuit of happiness within your country could potentially be influencing factors, however I think there is plenty more to it. Once you´ve made a selection on what country will be yours, you can then educate yourself and strive to serve and improve the country in which you call your own.
I would invite you to think to yourself about whether or not you are patriotic towards your country, what constitutes your country being great, what entitles you to call a country your own. Leave your answer or thoughts in the comments section.
I´ve personally concluded that nothing could take away my country from my heart. My patriotism is founded off the land with the luxurious freedoms being the perks and bonuses. Having been born and lived in my my country I know the potential for greatness. No hardship whether by foreign military, loss of freedom, economic decline, or even loss of citizenship could sway my loyalty and take away my American spirit, my American blood. America is my land.
